Wax food

I took this shot in front of Maisen in Omotesando, which is a famous fried pork restaurant to put it bluntly. These display foods are made entirely of wax! I don’t know how these displays keep from melting in the boiling summer heat of Tokyo. There’s a big area near Ueno where they make this stuff. A display like this might cost a few hundred dollars to order and have made(maybe even more, some really complex ones that come close to $1,000~ USD!). I’ve seen single slices of realistic-looking toast for sale for about $30USD. They have an odd feeling when you touch them, a little rubbery but pretty sturdy. This is nothing new in Japan, wax foods have been used in restaurant displays for ages. I just liked how realistic this one was, with the little glistening fish eggs.

oh yes, the crepes displays are mind blowing. I’ve never wanted to eat wax so much in my life!

I’m so amazed how these displays seem to survive the summer heat. It would be really funny to see the steak melting off the table along with the fake chopsticks. :D
