Coffee and chocolate

Waki and I took a walk in the magnificent Isetan underground food court last weekend in Shinjuku. That place is a palace of food. Endless isles of designer cakes and chocolates from all over the world, then turn a corner and endless fine meats and fish. The wine and liquor area was also fantastic, with various whiskies 50 years aged and beyond complete with its own tasting bar($3 a shot!). After walking for so long, I took Waki to one of the mini-cafes at one of the chocolatiers. We sat at a little counter and ordered their coffee and chocolate set. They had several different types of coffees, each with their recommended chocolate. I had a somewhat bitter blend with a chocolate filled with caramel truffle. Waki’s chocolate was really interesting, as it had a little spot of salt in the center which was actually really nice and offset the sweetness. We continued our Christmas shopping after that and wound up taking another break an hour later(that’s how big this place is, we spent a few hours in a food court…). This one was at an Italian butcher where we sat and drank red wine and enjoyed a plate of various grades of prosciutto. Anyone visiting Tokyo MUST visit the Isetan in Shinjuku, and I owe my friend Wa-l for showing me there.
