This post is basically a result of my overexposure to 8-bit Cafe and too many visits to Akihabara, not to mention my recent obsession/addiction with chiptune. LSDJ is the de facto chiptune software next to nanoloop and likely a slew of other homebrew options. In order to use LSDJ, you either need emulation software or you need to run it off an older Gameboy using a special cartridge sold online(by this kind gentleman in fact). You can also run it off a Gameboy DS, using an R4 and no other additional hardware(although it’s probably better to run it on an old Gameboy for authentic sound). An R4 can be picked up in Akihabara for around ¥6,000 or online for much less. Here’s how:
1. Go here, make a donation and wait a day or so for your LSDJ download link.
2. Download Lameboy from this link.
3. Copy Lameboy files and the lsdj.gb file to your R4(if you have an R4, you already know how to do this).
4. Boot up your DS, run Lameboy, find lsdj.gb in the file menu, then go back to the LSDJ homepage and start reading the tutorials(what I’m doing right now).
If you want to know what LSDJ sounds like, listen to some of these.
HOW TO SAVE: Saving songs in LSDJ will not save your songs. You need to use Lameboy’s save feature in order to retain your save states. After saving your LSDJ song in the save menu, press X to have Lameboy save the current state. When you open LSDJ again, you will be back at the save state, and all of your saved songs will be there.

Beethoven's real instrument of choice.
I was apprehensive at first, I mean, it’s not like you find just what you want, every day, and realize it’s been right in front of you from the very beginning. Try Googling the terms, “8-bit plugin Garageband,” and you’ll surely come up with this. The de facto bit generator for Garageband. Keep clicking through the search results, eventually you’ll find this. I’m sure maybe only one of you ever even considered Googling that, but there, I saved you the trouble. Why was I looking for this? I want to add some old school beep boop bop to my tunes, and this looked like the key.
After a bit of a hassle with their credit card system, I was finally emailed a download link for Punchpak. What is Punchpak? I didn’t know either, all I knew from the site was that it makes Pro Logic 8 sound like an NES and their demo songs were pretty rad. $12 later I’ve been granted access download links for Logic Pro/Garageband, Kontakt and Live. I ran the install for Pro Logic/Garageband, now there’s an entirely new instrument section in Garageband called “Puremagnetik Punchpak” with software instruments(29 total) with names like “Mega man”, “Excitebike”, and “Kid Icarus”. I’ll post some chiptunes once I’ve composed a song or two. Puremagnetik offers instrument and loop packs for individual download, or less expensive monthly subscription. You can check out their site here.

In desperate need of a respectable laptop bag, worthy of street cred. No more velcro black ballistic fiber bs snap-on turbo-lock massive strap bags. This situation calls for dramatic measures to be taken. Fi-Hi, brought to my attention by superpowerups. I think MASTER G Stereo Messenger Bag w/ 17″ Laptop “CHOCOLATE” is the one that will save us all.
A good chaser: Tape Hub
Unrelated, had to clean out the closets today, end of the year and all. This guy was way in the back, hadn’t seen sunlight for a long time, guess all he wanted was a smoke.
